Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Baltimore

The weather is finally heating up and soon you could have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with setting up your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Quality Refrigeration, there are a number of other tasks you can do to remain comfortable and save money this season.

During the in-between season in Baltimore, those far too few spring temps, you may use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to make sure you’re utilizing ceiling fans and your air conditioning as you should be. Here’s a couple things to remember:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving any money. Raising your thermostat by a few degrees, in addition to running your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level very much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the duration of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to switch according to the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to ensure the air is blowing down. You can stand underneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, change the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually cool your air, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature on the thermostat.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to take in the wind chill that a fan produces you’re wasting energy by operating your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
