How to keep your Baltimore home comfortable this winter

The dipping temperatures in Baltimore aren’t heading anywhere, and while it’s simple to dream about the warmer temps, it’s crucial to remember that you can stay just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a big role in this, which is why it’s so important to complete annual furnace service.

We do have to bring up the fact that there are few things that will offer as much to your comfort this winter as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service is recommended be completed annually. After all, who wants to spend a long winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them comfortable the entire season?

Already done with your annual furnace service? Here are a couple other things you can do to help keep your home comfortable:

  • Energy audit — most energy companies will offer an energy audit for your home so you can identify areas that need addressed. You might be surprised what areas are allowing hot or cold air to escape.
  • Weatherstripping — regardless of the door’s location, doors offer the opportunity for a lot of cold air to come in to your home. However, when your door is shut, you could still have air making its way inside. Check to see if your weatherstripping is in working-order or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be allowing cold air inside. If you notice any concerns, weatherstripping is easy to swap and may take care of the problem.
  • Recessed lighting — one of the most common places for air leaks may be your recessed lighting. Depending on the light’s age, they could be letting all the hot air in your home sneak out through your ceiling. Fixing this is as basic as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape.

These couple of tips are just the beginning, but do recognize that there are other simple fixes you can complete once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy projects to accomplish on the weekend.
