When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, most of them can be traced back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself enough time to look through and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last two years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises around the end of their life. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
