Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For a long time, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 as a result of its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To lessen environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now compatible with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and doesn’t contain chlorine, making it ozone-friendly. You can feel good about using this refrigerant in Baltimore because it’ll help make your cooling system work efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was manufactured prior to 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should look into upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is completely phased out. The old refrigerant will become rare in the next few years, costing you more to use your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Quality Refrigeration work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. Additionally, avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
